CH'NG Lip Kang Eric
Executive Director
Oriental Art and Cultural Center
Three years ago, I formed my own company and mainly work on different kinds of art activities and some kinds of art educations. The challenges that my company facing right now are not internal issues, but more external. The whole arts and culture ecology in Malaysia is totally different. I was a graduate majoring in accounting. Then I spent 10 years to move in the arts industry but just by my knowledge or experience. I did not have this kind of insights and academic knowledge. EMA course is really suitable, especially for us, busy entrepreneurs in the arts industry. Indeed I learnt a lot from this programme, especially those critical and academic sides.

Having moved back from London recently, I wanted an efficient and thorough way of learning more about the local and regional cultural and creative industries. Although we have yet to complete our first semester, I’ve found that this EMA programme has already opened many doors. The emphasis on teamwork and networking allows for thought-provoking exchanges. The fact that the course is taught by industry professionals provides invaluable insight into the future of arts in HK.

After working for nearly 12 years as cultural reporter, I found my interest in cultural and creative industries. I need an efficient and thorough way of learning, so I applied the EMA programme.

It is a good opportunity for me to establish a network for arts organizations and managers in Asia and the world. The EMA cohorts come from various cultural backgrounds of the Asia. They are all experienced arts administrators. Through the communication and teamwork, I’ve learnt more international insights into arts. Instead of absorbing knowledge passively, the EMA learning comes a process of self-reflection and experiences sharing.

Now I am working in Shanghai Concert Hall. After studying the EMA programme for one year, I’ve had a better understanding in leadership which helps me a lot in my work.

I worked for the government for around twelve years, then 5 years ago I set up a company and started working independently because I need more rooms. The biggest challenge for me is human resources problem because I need my staff to work very independently to handle the whole project by themselves, and I am trying to control the company in a small scale in order to have the flexibility. At the very beginning, I wanted to go back to school when I left the government, but I couldn’t find other courses similar to EMA. I am really concerned about peer learning, like what kind of classmates I would have. When I see this course, they are recruiting those experienced managers at the management level, that means I can meet people who are working in the same field and they have experiences I can learn from them.

After working in the field for years, I have been looking for an ideal master programme in arts management. Though this EMA programme is new and started recruiting its first class last year, I applied without hesitation after reading its idea and modules. The first semester, an intensive teaching period in February following by an e-learning period, is soon to be completed, I am satisfied and found it a valuable opportunity to learn from a professional teaching team and the synergy of the whole class. New idea is sparkled and this will enhance a more nimble mind on my concept of arts management.

I am so proud to be the first batch of EMA programme of The HKIEd. The EMA is a tailor-made programme for experienced arts administrators, with experienced professors, inspiring case discussion and colleagues who come from various cultural backgrounds. Instead of absorbing knowledge passively, the experience of learning here becomes a process of self-reflection and a process of searching for a more self-adapted strategy. We constantly learn from lecturers and peers, soak ourselves in this stimulating learning environment like sponges, which, I believe, will bring remarkable progress to my career in arts administration.

In organizing a young NGO, I was frustrated in dealing with funding, operating and management issues. EMA programme just like a “compass” gives me direction. Either on the creative entrepreneurship or the creative management, they all gave me many insights to run my organization. The peers, my respective classmates, gave me a lot of suggestions and comments which help me to think about my planning strategies. Moreover, I like the ITPs period. Since I am away from my school life for long time, it was not easy to go back to the study mode. Ten days is very good for me to focus, dip into and engage totally in the class. I am very blessed to be the second cohort of EMA programme and these valuable teachers and classmates who inspirit me a lot.

I always believe there is no right or wrong when doing arts management. The key to making appropriate decisions is experiences or theoretical knowledge …… If I cannot convince others with my experience, I can explain to my boss through the concepts and theories behind. EMA helps us think about the reason behind the work, so we are more consciously of what we’re doing, and thus can work more systematically.

I learn not only from the ‘teachers’, but also through consulting our ‘peers’. EMA provided the chance for me to connect with the Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association (HKAAA), which establishes a network for arts organizations and managers, and provides opportunities for fellow administrators to share and learn from each other.
WANG Shu Chen Janice

The EMA(AME) programme provided me a very good opportunity to learn and explore, to know and connect to the culture and arts field in Asia and the world. After one-year studying, the programme pushed me to step out and try more possibilities, I believe it will surely help me a lot in my current work as well as my career.
